Field notes.

Working thoughts on behavior, trust, clarity, and change — drawn from the work, and from the region we do it in.

Public engagement

Clarity is a trust strategy.

When people can’t follow a process, they don’t assume it’s complicated — they assume it isn’t for them. Clarity is how an institution signals that participation is genuinely open. The clearest voice in the room is usually the most trusted one.

Behavior + change

People don’t resist change. They resist confusion.

Most “resistance” is a failure of understanding in disguise. When Dallas began rewriting land-use rules for the first time in decades, the hard part wasn’t the policy — it was helping residents see where they fit in it. Explain the stake before the change, and resistance often becomes participation.

Access + belonging

In a multilingual city, plain language is infrastructure.

More than four in ten Dallas residents speak a language other than English at home. In a region like this, plain language and accessible design aren’t a courtesy — they’re the load-bearing structure that lets a message reach the people it’s meant for. Accessibility is a communications discipline, not a checkbox.

Civic communications

Growth outpaces understanding.

Dallas–Fort Worth adds hundreds of residents a day. Each one arrives without the institutional memory that tells a longtime resident how to show up, weigh in, or be counted. Fast-growing places have to keep re-teaching participation — or watch civic life thin out even as the population climbs.

Arts marketing

Audiences don’t return for programming. They return for belonging.

Arts organizations tend to market the show. But people come back for the feeling of being somewhere they belong. The strongest cultural institutions treat audience as a relationship to deepen, not a seat to fill — and that’s what carries them through hard seasons and back into growth.

Advocacy

A movement moves when a private story becomes a public one.

Advocacy rarely turns on new information. It turns on the moment a personal story becomes something the public can see itself in. The work is to honor the human center of that story while giving it a structure strong enough to carry across press, policy, and community.
